Where I Studied
|
I was fortunate to get my
education in some of the premier educational institutions in the
country. I completed my doctoral program at the Faculty of
Management Studies (FMS),
Delhi . It is one of the pioneer and finest place for
management education and research. Unlike many institutions that
are known for its typical research approach and influence of
certain school of thought, FMS is always open to various school of
thoughts and encouraged true multidisciplinary research. My stay at FMS
during 1988 to 1992 as a University Grant Commission (UGC) Research
Fellow is always memorable. |

|
I was lucky enough to get
Prof. M. M. Anand and Dr. J. K. Mitra as advisers. I still remember
my discussion sessions with Dr. Mitra at the D'Scool Coffee House and the
way he used grill me. |
|
 |
In fact that grill
refined my approach and methodology, and I could get it okayed
by Prof. M. M. Anand in the first round itself. My interactions with Prof. Anand are memorable, and I used admire his skills in
identifying flaws and gaps at a glance.
FMS had a wonderful
computing and library facilities. The Computer Center Head Dr.
Anil Saini and FMS Librarian Dr. Goswami were always helpful and
made it a point that students get the required facilities. In
fact, FMS Library was the only library where smoking was allowed
at that time ! |
 |
|
|
I used to spend a good
amount of time at Ratan Tata Library and the Coffee House at
D'School. My interaction with the fellow researchers from Economics
and Sociology departments over numerous coffee sessions really
helped me sharpen
my research skills. |
|
My stay at Gwyer Hall
was memorable. With its spacious and comfortable rooms, Gwyer
Hall had the enviable reputation of being the best hostel for
men in DU. Off course we
could never use the fire place. However, we used to keep the
electric room heater at the fireplace. Most rooms face lovely
well kept lawns on both front and back. Room number 11 is a well organized and well kept
room always sot after for cozy late night parties. Panditji's canteen
at Gwyer Hall is
a notable aspect of every Gwyerian.

I did
my graduation and postgraduation studies in Psychology at
Presidency College, Chennai. I still remember
the feeling I had when I first entered the college for my
admission interview. The teak wood staircase with royal red carpet from
the portico leading to the first floor where the Principal's Office
and Eyrton Powel's statue were located. It gave me a regal image and
felt that one should be fortunate enough to get admission in the
Presidency College.
It was a new world
for me who had no exposure to a metropolitan city, that too in a
very prestigious college of the country. The culture at
Psychology Department was very cosmopolitan and known to be the
Hep department in the college. |
|
|
Presidency College
had lovely gardens and we used take pride in showing the well
manicured gardens and lawns to friends and guests. Our Principal
Mr. J. Ramachandran, fondly known as JR among students and
faculty, was very particular about cleanliness and maintenance of
the gardens. The banyan tree next to Psychology Department
in the garden was a major hideout among students.
Located on the Beach
Road facing Marina Beach, the Presidency College is a
architectural beauty. It is a wonderful site to look at the Marina Beach on a rainy day from first floor of the college. |

My stay at Victoria
Hostel, an exclusive hostel for Presidency College boys was very
interesting. It had wonderful facilities. A lot of indoor and
outdoor games including Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Basket Ball, a
library with very good collection of books, better than many college
libraries. At times even now I regret for not utilizing those sports
facilities properly. It had two dining halls - one vegetarian
and the other non vegetarian - which were adjutant and closer to the
main gate - two minutes walking distance from the lodging
area. The food was very decent and the favorites were dosa, pongal
and gee rice. The Sunday lunch was special and used attract a lot of
food lovers.
Though, we were only three of us from the same class - Vasudevan,
Vaithialingam and myself - in the hostel, I had a very good friend
circle. Often my days scholar friends Asaithambi and Karunanidhi
used to visit me. |
|
I had my early
schooling in a Cristian Missionary School, St. Therasa Primary
school, and later joined the Government High School, Poolampatty
where I completed my schooling. |
